iOS 6.1.2 jailbreak set to be released later today

MARANA, Arizona, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk joined a growing chorus of players backing the idea of the PGA Tour adopting a local rule to ignore a proposed ban on putters anchored to the body on Tuesday. American Stricker, widely regarded as one of the game's best putters, said he had changed his view after consistently opposing the use of long putters and that he would not be surprised to see the tour dig in its heels. ...

Things To Look For Before Applying For Cash Loans | All about ...

When you?re looking to get cash loans and you have bad credit, you could be confused by your options. Many think that it?s impossible to receive a loan, but that isn?t the case anymore. Although it can be difficult because you don?t meet most standards for some companies, there are alternatives to getting a loan from a bank.?There are companies that are open and target specifically people with bad credit. These companies are generally lenders with loose standards, and you want to make sure that you do research before you take any drastic choices when choosing a loan company. When you?re in a tight spot you may not think about doing any research but it is possible to get this done quickly so you?re on your way without a lot of questions asked.

Almost all of the?payday loan?companies in the current market tend to have high interest rates which could end up costing you in the long run if you don?t plan on paying them off immediately. Not to mention that the collectors can be?aggressive and harsher?due to your credit situation. You should be careful when borrowing money from some of these places. Make sure that you know your terminology and check the fine print before you sign any type of contract. Payday loans are made much like a bank loan and if you don?t have a job or collateral it can be more difficult to obtain one. If you have a car title this can be an important bargaining tool to get the quick cash you need, or a blank check so they have the opportunity to cash post-dated checks to pay your loan. Make sure that you have the money in your account when the payday loan is due or it could spiral out of control and lead to more problems than you were in at the beginning. Often?payday cash loans?have the option to roll-over which means if you can?t pay on time, they?ll just create a new loan period which almost always has hidden fees.

When you?re going to a payday place, they generally won?t run your credit because they specifically handle customers with bad credit. You may also find these companies under names such as a cash advance company. You?ve probably seen commercials for these cash loan places and they can be online or in person. Either way you?ll have to fill out an application and wait to see if it?s accepted. When they are approved, the funds are automatically put into your bank account, or in hand. This is important to keep in mind when there?s that emergency situation that you need money, fast. Taking the time to make sure that you?re borrowing from the right company is important so make sure that you?ve done your research.?Finding a company that will cater to your specific situation is crucial to get the highest cash loan available. If you go to smaller companies, you could be offered less. Either way when you?re in a tight spot, these?cash loanswill save the day.

Poor Social Media Practices Can Kill Businesses [Report]

A new research on social media says that, businesses can no longer adopt a trial-and-error method on social media. The research finds that there is a connection between social media and business metrics such as consumers? probability to purchase or interact with companies through leading social channels.

The study is consists of responses from more than 23,200 U.S. online consumers who have interacted with a company via the companies? social media channel. The study was conducted across more than 100 U.S. brands in six industries: airline, auto, banking, credit card, telecom and utility, from November to December 2012.

The research also measures the overall consumer experience in terms of consumer engagement with companies through their social channels for needs of marketing and servicing. The study spotlights on social media engagement, marketing and servicing. Marketing engagements include connecting with consumers to build brand awareness and likeness, plus to promote coupons and deals. Servicing engagements include answering specific consumer questions or resolving problems.

The study sets up performance benchmarks and industry best practices that provide insights to companies to help them make the most of their social media efforts.

The report also highlights that, companies need to understand how their consumers use social media and then keeping that as a basis they need to develop a strategy to address their usage model.

Social Media Marketing

The study finds that engagement ability changes by age group in social marketing engagements. About 39% of consumers aged 30-49 years and 38% of respondents aged 50+ years interact with a company in a social marketing engagement perspective. But only 23% of consumers aged between 18 and 29 years interact with companies.

Consumers engagement with brands on social media vary by age (in percentage)

The study finds that the automobile industry is the only industry that performs well in both types of social media engagement.

Social Media Servicing

Companies that throw away discount coupons should not ignore customers who need the service and want the company?s help, adds Anderson.

On the contrary to social media engagement, 43% of consumers who are aged between 18 and 29 years use social media for servicing interactions, while 39% of consumers aged 30-49 years use social channels for servicing needs. Only 18% of consumers aged 50+ interact with a company through social networks for a servicing.

Social media for servicing interactions with brands vary by age

The wireless industry is performing well in social servicing, and the utility industry in social marketing.

Satisfaction Rates:

87% (satisfaction scores of 951 and higher on a 1,000-point scale) indicate that the online social interaction with the company has increased the purchase probability from the company.

On the other hand, 10% (500 out of 1000) of the consumers who are less satisfied consumers show less probability to purchase from that brand/company.

The study?unveils?that some industries are more effective in applying best practices into social media engagement strategies than others. When looking across industries the only industry which performs well in both marketing and servicing social media interactions is known to be ??auto industry?. Other industries performing well are wireless in social servicing interactions and utility in social marketing interactions.

Bringing the Best of Russian and Other Slavic Literature to the West ...

Most if not all of the names on Glagoslav?s list will be unknown to English-speakers. This of course is the point.

By Daniel Kalder

Glagoslav Publications was founded in May 2011, and in the brief period since this independent English-Dutch house, based in London and Den Bosch, is dedicated to releasing works that are ?uniquely Slavic in nature? has developed a fascinating list featuring some of the top names in Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian literature. Recently Publishing Perspectives?spoke to managing editor and publisher Maxim Hodak, an entertainment and media lawyer turned literary entrepreneur about running a niche press in a climate traditionally tough for translated works.

?The idea of establishing this publishing house was born out of the visible need to compensate for the lack of translations of Slavic literature on the English language book market,? says Maxim Hodak. ?Financial backing was provided by a private investor who saw the urgency and potential of this business endeavour. ?Today our team consists of seven staff members and several freelancers. We decided to first publish the absolute leaders of modern Slavic literature whose books have a strong appeal for the English speaking reader.?

English speakers may not recognize many authors in the Glagoslav catalog, but that is the point.

And yet, the first thing even the semi-informed reader will note when studying Glagoslav?s list is the total absence of many Slavic nations: there are no Poles, Czechs or Slovenes for instance. Hodak explains that this is not down to prejudice:?

?Our current focus is on the Eastern Slavic branch, merely by the fact of our own ethnic heritage. I was born in Ukraine, and this business has a special significance for me on a personal level. Moreover, these particular countries have remained unknown to the wider Western audience, and we?d like that by ways of our books people learned more about them. We?re publishing authors who were born in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, and who embody these countries? culture and know their history. We?re also planning on publishing works of other authors from the culturally diverse former USSR.??

Telling Unknown Stories

Maxim Hodak, founder of Glagoslav

Most if not all of the names on Glagoslav?s list are unlikely to ring many bells in the heads of English speakers. This of course is the point, and indeed, adds Hodak, English and Dutch speakers are missing a rich reading experience by not knowing about what?s going on in the literature of the former USSR:?

?Many of our authors are the recipients of national literary awards and other recognitions in their homelands, they?ve gained mass readership, attention and respect from critics. For instance, Elena Chizhova won The Russian Booker Prize, her The Time of Women became a bestseller in several European countries and she has received a large amount of reviews in American, British and Australian media. Edouard Kochergin, Aleksandr Terekhov and Zakhar Prilepin are venerable writers whose works reflect various complicated time periods in Russian history ? the desperate post-WWII years, intrigues associated with the communist cr?me de la cr?me, and modern day Russia.?

Hodak cites Russian Kochergin as a fascinating writer who should be much better known:

Metro 2034, the bestselling Russian dystopian novel, is being offered in a Dutch translation.

?A gifted artist, working as a stage designer for one of our most famous theaters, the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater in St.Petersburg, he put together his childhood memoirs, talking about a forced separation from his parents when he was two, life in foster care for children of the enemies of the state, his trek to get back home to Leningrad from an orphanage in Siberia, to find his mother who did ten years? prison time after being falsely accused of espionage. His remarkable book turned out to be frank, painful and very epic, historic in nature? We have many more authors whose works we are bringing out to our readers, and we?re confident we can satisfy highly demanding literary tastes.?

The boldest aspect of Glagoslav?s publishing campaign is its emphasis on Ukrainian and Belorussian literatures, about which virtually nothing is known in English speaking countries. This is our misfortune, says Hodak:

?Modern Ukrainian literature is currently at the peak of its renaissance, and the post-1991 period has seen an incredible diversity of literary genres and themes. The Grande Dame of Ukrainian literature is Maria Matios, and her books regularly make the top of literary billboard and are recognized nationally, earning various literary awards. One of her works is considered the best Ukrainian literary work of the last fifteen years. There?s another remarkable author Irene Rozdobudko who has mastered the psychological thriller genre, and a young author Larysa Denysenko, a human rights Ukrainian lawyer and activist, whose satirical comedy Saraband Sarah?s Band is also in our catalogue. A very interesting author Serhii Zhadan writes about the first independent steps Ukraine was making right after the fall of the Soviet state. He talks about the values and social make up that evolved and dominated as a result of these events. All of these writers produce works in the Ukrainian language.

?As for Belorussian authors, many deserve attention. We are gearing up to release a novel by Uladzimir Karatkevich, the forefather of the Belorussian historical novel as a genre. We?re also working to publish a novel by a contemporary Belorussian author Natalka Babina. She is a writer and a journalist who has already firmly established herself at home and in the neighbouring countries. Russian classic literary traditions are ever present in Ukrainian and Belorussian literature, but these countries have also developed their own unique literary flavor.?

Glagoslav publish their books in every format from hardback to PDF and make assiduous use of social media for promotional purposes. If you can?t find a Glagoslav book in your local bookshop, Hodak stresses that you can order a copy and receive it within ??a day or two. Recent technological advancements offer rational and convenient tools for today?s publishing industry to produce books cost-efficiently, which is especially applicable for publishing Eastern Slavic books for which a high print run is not expected.?

Reaching the Unknown Reader

Every book Glagoslav publishes also gets its own micro-site. Hodak explains:

And Uzbek Dmitry Glukhovsky's A Poet and Bin-Laden is being offered in English.

?We wanted to establish an information platform where each of our books would be represented fully, with reviews, author interviews, visual and audio material that would expose our books? background. This is seen as a convenient reader-publisher interface that has also worked well for journalists who review our books. Besides, being works of design art themselves, these websites re-create each book?s unique atmosphere and help readers tune in.?

?The hardest part is to cost-efficiently reach the target audience and deliver the information about our catalogue,? says Hodak. But he is proud of what Glagoslav has achieved so far:

?Our biggest success has been in building a company with a solid book list, organizing a large distribution network and making our books available worldwide. And we did all that in just under a year?our biggest surprise so far was the unexpected attention and warm welcome from readers who have only known a few works of Russian classics that have been incorporated in, say, the American high school curriculum. We?re ever grateful for amazing response we?ve received to the release of our classic Belorussian non-fiction war novel Khatyn by Ales Adamovich. We knew the novel was considered a collectible item among WWII experts, but we did not expect the book to create such a blast ? literally thousands of eager readers who not only wanted to learn something new about Belarus in general, but also recognized the universal character of the book and supported us in bringing the message out.?

Among the firm?s latest publications is?Kobzar by Taras Shevchenko which Hodak describes as ?the corner stone of Ukrainian literature and the foundation of the modern Ukrainian literary language.? Other books pending include a Dutch version of the popular post-apocalyptic thriller Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky and A Poet and Bin Laden by former BBC writer-in-residence Hamid Ismailov. ?His book on the rise of the Islamic fundamentalism in Uzbekistan has already attracted much attention and it will be followed by many presentations, meet-ups and interviews with the author. We?re also working on A History of Belarus, an unprecedented non-fiction edition that covers grassroots Belorussian history up to the modern day.?

But why should we read works by the Eastern Slavs? Hodak does not hesitate before answering:

?First of all, these books are the source of knowledge about amazing periods of history, people, places, and the circumstances of people?s lives which might have been fairly unknown to the English speaking reader. Moreover, these books are the testimony of truth, based on historic archives, documents and witness records of people who lived through a period of time now gone forever. These books tell a story never ever told in the media. Besides that, the depth of thought and perspective of reality that Slavic authors are known for can enrich the Western reader?s inner world.?

Another Blizzard Aims for Atlantic Canada

By Matt Alto, Meteorologist
February 17, 2013; 11:07 AM

Nearly one week after a major winter snowstorm hit New England and Atlantic Canada with heavy snowfall and hurricane-force winds, a blizzard will close out the weekend in parts of Atlantic Canada.

Conditions will continue to worsen across Atlantic Canada through tonight into a south-to-north fashion as the potent storm that brought snow to the Carolinas arrives.

An all-out blizzard will unfold from New Brunswick to easternmost Quebec. Southern and central Nova Scotia can expect similar conditions despite the day starting with rain.

Farther north, an intrusion of warm air will lead to a wintry mix or a changeover to rain along the Newfoundland coast with all snow across northern Newfoundland.

The snow will unleash between 30 and 45 cm (12 and 18 inches) of snow across central New Brunswick, the Gaspe Peninsula and Anticosti Island.

The pace of the storm should prevent higher totals, according to AccuWeather.com Canadian Weather Expert Brett Anderson.

On Monday, the worst of the windswept snow will center on central and western Labrador as howling winds significantly blow and drift the snow across the Canadian Maritimes.

Video: Is $500 enough cash to compensate for cruise ship ordeal?

>> so what rights do you have as a cruise ship passenger? carolyn spencer-brown is editor-in-chief of cruisecritic.com.

>> thank you for having me.

>> i'm sure the ticket has fine print .

>> so much fine print .

>> that people don't read. what does it say?

>> it says essentially unless it's a serious physical illness or death, you don't really have any rights.

>> nothing?

>> nothing.

>> is that because a lot of ships have foreign registrys?

>> that's part of it. i mean, the way the cruise ships operate is different from how hotels operate. they have flags, their flags are in bahamas, malta, because they get advantageous tax situations. it's all about finance.

>> and to avoid the situation which we saw here, i thought it was interesting reading over the notes. you say if you get on a newer ship you might not have gone through this. explain that to me.

>> here's what's good news coming out of a bad situation. in 2009 , there was a new law passed by the international maritime organization which actually sets the standards of how cruise ships operate no matter where their flag is. it's called safe return to port. it requires ships built after -- in 2010 and beyond to have dual engine rooms. so if for some reason an engine room is iscapacitated as it was on carnival "triumph," you've got a backup.

>> you can get back on your own power. let's talk about compensation. folks are saying they'll get a full refund, free cruise credit, and $500. in your view, is that enough given what these folks have been through?

>> you know, it's a new precedent for the cruise industry. they don't normally hand out cash bonuses for surviving an experience. i have to say, it was dismissive, i thought. your experience is only worth $500. i thought they could have gone in a little higher.

>> i've enjoyed some of the watercooler conversation about this. there are people who are diehard cruise fans who don't seem at all shaken by this and will continue to take cruises. others say, well, that's the reason i've never taken one. what's your take on whether the industry is going to take a hit here?

>> well, the industry will take a hit. it will take a hit no matter what anybody says. there are going to be people who haven't cruised before, who looked at this and said, my god, no way. but it won't take a hit for long. if the industry survives after the " costa concordia " which was tragic with 32 people dead, and it's rebounding now, it won't take too long a hit for this. i think what's important is to understand that this is not the norm. that cruises generally are very safe. in fact, these people were safe the whole time they were on board. wasn't comfortable or pretty, but they were safe. and it is a very magical vacation.

>> i've heard some voices out there who argue that the industry has gotten too large, it's grown too fast. is that something you've weighed in on before?

>> i don't think that's the issue at all. i think the issue is this ship had problems before it went out on the sea, that carnival did not solve immediately as it probably should have. we don't know that those problems, the propulsion problems are related to the engine room . we have no way of knowing that at this point.

>> right.

>> i think it's more that cruise lines have to be focused on -- i think it's more -- there's more cutbacks than too many ships and don't know how to handle it.

>> as mark pointed out, there's going to be a full ntsb investigation to get answers.

>> that will take time.

>> we appreciate your answers. thanks for being here. we asked you to weigh in on our web site , today.com, asking if you had been a passenger on the carnival "triumph, "would you ever cruise again. 30% answered yes, 70% said no. keep in mind, that's

'Blade Runner' accused of 'premeditated' murder

After being arrested and charged with murdering his girlfriend, Olympian Oscar Pistorius cried during his first court appearance Friday. Police say Reeva Steenkamp was shot four times with a pistol that is registered to Pistorius, and Pistorius' agent released a statement saying the murder is 'disputed in the strongest terms.' NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

By Cecile Antonie, Rohit Kachroo and Ian Johnston, NBC News

Olympic and Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius sobbed as he appeared in a South African court Friday and was accused of the "premeditated" murder of his girlfriend.

The sprinter -- nicknamed "Blade Runner" because he races wearing carbon-fiber prosthetic blades after he was born without a fibula in both legs ? is accused of?killing model Reeva Steenkamp at his home in a Pretoria suburb early Thursday.

Pistorius disputes the accusations in "the strongest terms," according to a statement issued following the court appearance which said the runner sent "his deepest sympathies" to Steenkamp's family.

South African police said Thursday that Pistorius and Steenkamp, 30, were the only people in the house at the time of the shooting.

Oscar Pistorius, the superstar athlete who became the first double amputee sprinter to compete in the Olympics, is the sole suspect in the murder of law school graduate and famous South African model Reeva Steenkamp. NBC's Rehema Ellis reports.

Pistorius, 26, arrived at the court about two hours before the hearing that began at about 4:30 a.m. ET Friday.

As the hearing started, Pistorius kept his head down, cried and held his hands to his face. At times, he appeared confused.

"Take it easy. Come, take a seat," Reuters quoted Magistrate Desmond Nair as telling him.

A defense lawyer referred to his client?s ?traumatised state of mind.?

Several of Pistorius? family members were in the courtroom and also appeared emotional; one seemed distraught and others wept.

Prosecutors alleged the Olympic runner had committed "premeditated murder" and he was formally charged.

Pistorius was remanded in custody pending a bail hearing next week. An application by the media for the proceedings to be broadcast was rejected at the start of the hearing.

After the hearing, a statement issued by Pistorius' agent said: "The alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms." It added:

"Oscar Pistorius has made history as an Olympic and Paralympic sportsman and has been an inspiration to others the world over. He has made it very clear that he would like to send his deepest sympathies to the family of Reeva. He would also like to express his thanks through us today for all the messages of support he has received - but as stated our thoughts and prayers today should be for Reeva and her family - regardless of the circumstances."

Citing a neighbor, the Afrikaans-language Beeld newspaper?reported Friday that Pistorius shot his girlfriend four times through a bathroom door. NBC News could not independently verify the report, which was translated by Reuters.

Numerous media outlets reported Thursday that Pistorius may have mistaken the woman for an intruder, but police said neighbors had heard noises before the shots and that there had been previous "domestic" incidents at the house.

The athlete who rose to fame in London last summer as the first amputee runner in the Olympics has reportedly been arrested by South African police after his girlfriend was shot and killed in his home. NBC's Rohit Kachroo reports and NBC sports analyst Ato Boldon talks about the case, calling it an "absolute shock."

    'Charming, great guy'
The couple had been dating for several months, and??seemed happy,? Steenkamp?s publicist Sarit Tomlinson told TODAY on Thursday. There was no sign of discord between the two, she said.

Tomlinson said that Pistorius was a ?charming, great guy.?

According to her Facebook page, Steenkamp was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and raised in Port Elizabeth.

She?earned a law degree at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University before moving to Johannesburg and earning a job as the South African face of cosmetics maker Avon.

Greg Stokell, headmaster of St. Dominic?s Priory school in Port Elizabeth, told South Africa's The Times newspaper that Steenkamp was ?a vibrant, friendly, diligent, and motivated student who was popular with and respected by staff and peers alike.?

From an early age, "Reeva had the full support of her parents who encouraged her to maximize her strengths and abilities to achieve her dreams,? Stokell told the paper. ?She set high goals for herself in everything she did and she consistently converted opportunities into success.?

A police officer holds a gun that was allegedly used in the shooting of Reeva Steenkamp, Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend.

Steenkamp was featured in men?s magazine FHM in December 2011, and named one of the publication?s 100 Sexiest Women in the World for two years in a row.

Pistorius battled for years to be allowed to compete against able-bodied athletes and was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics.

He qualified for the 400-meter semi-finals and 4 x 400-meter final at the London 2012 Summer Games.

His website highlighted that Pistorius ran in 11 races during the London 2012 Olympics and Paralymics and returned home with "two Paralympic gold medals, Paralympic silver, two world records, a Paralympic record, an Olympic individual semi-final and an Olympic final."

NBC's John Newland, Jason Cumming and Matthew DeLuca, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Pistorius, a double amputee born without fibulas in his legs, has trained hard to participate in the Olympics despite having to wear prosthetic legs. NBC's Mary Carillo reports.

Facebook hacked, but says users not affected

Facebook today announced that it was the target of a "sophisticated" hacking attempt in January, though the company assured its users that their data was not "compromised."

The information was communicated in a blog post by Facebook Security. The social network's security experts explained that a few employees had visited an infected site, which installed malware on their laptops via a then-unknown bug in Java. The laptops, Facebook noted in its defense, were "fully-patched and running up-to-date anti-virus software."

Suspicious activity was noted on Facebook's internal networks shortly thereafter, tracked to the laptops in question, and remedied; The Java exploit was reported to Oracle (which makes the Web app platform), which issued a patch on Feb. 1.

"We have found no evidence that Facebook user data was compromised," the company wrote in the blog post. It also reported that it is working with law enforcement and other companies' security teams to analyze and prevent future breaches.

SD Senate panel endorses incentives for wind power

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota Senate committee endorsed a measure Thursday that would provide financial incentives to encourage the stalled construction of wind power projects in the state.

The Commerce and Energy Committee voted 6-1 to pass the measure after lawmakers and industry representatives said construction of wind farms has drawn to a standstill in South Dakota because the state imposes much higher taxes during construction than neighboring states do.

"Let's keep South Dakota open for business in wind energy," said Sen. Larry Rhoden, R-Union Center, the main sponsor of the bill. "Let's give these developers and utilities wanting to build multi-million dollar projects in our state a chance to succeed."

Rhoden and others said South Dakota currently would charge $7 million to $11 million in sales taxes and contractor's excise taxes during the construction phase of a typical wind farm. North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa would charge only $1 million to $2 million, they said.

Rhoden's bill originally sought to give wind projects refunds of the sales taxes and contractor's excise taxes they paid during construction, but the committee approved a new version worked out by the wind energy industry and Gov. Dennis Daugaard's office.

The new version would give a wind project an incentive payment roughly equal to 2 percent of its final cost. For example, a $5 million project would get a $100,000 incentive payment. One costing $100 million would get a $2 million incentive payment.

Dusty Johnson, the governor's chief of staff, said the incentive projects would be equal to about two-thirds of the sales taxes paid during construction by a wind power project

In return for the reduction in construction taxes, new wind farms would no longer get rebates of a gross receipts tax that is applied after they begin operating, Johnson said. Companies now use rebates of the gross receipts tax during the first decade of operation to help build transmission lines.

Johnson said South Dakota now is at a disadvantage to other states because it has no overall economic incentive program for large industrial projects. A former tax refund program has expired, and a new program intended as a replacement was rejected by voters in the November election.

"Under the current tax regime, it's pretty hard to envision any large scale wind development in the foreseeable future," Johnson said.

Representatives of the wind energy industry said South Dakota's tax structure puts it at a disadvantage because it levies a 2 percent excise tax on contractor's gross receipts for a project, a tax other states do not have. South Dakota also charges a 4 percent sales tax on materials used in constructing wind farms and other projects.

Rob Rebenitsch, director of the South Dakota Wind Energy Association, said South Dakota has 784 megawatts of installed wind power, while North Dakota has twice as much. Iowa has 4,536 megawatts of wind power installed, according to the U.S. Energy Department.

Rebenitsch said more than 13,000 megawatts of wind generation was installed across the nation last year in 192 projects costing $25 billion.

"Unfortunately, none of that generation was installed in South Dakota," Rebenitsch said.

Wind energy officials said the bill is a good start, but they believe larger incentives are needed to attract wind farms to South Dakota. They said they hope the measure will be changed to provide larger incentives as it moves through the Legislature.

Sen. Mark Johnston, R-Sioux Falls, said he objected to the bill because it deals with only one industry.

Johnson, the governor's chief of staff, said state officials and legislators are making progress in devising an overall incentive program that would cover agricultural processing and all other kinds of large construction projects.

Lung cancer overtakes breast cancer as most deadly form of disease among UK women

She said: "If these opposite trends in breast and lung cancer rates continue, then in 2015 lung cancer is going to become the first cause of cancer mortality in Europe.

"This is already true in the UK and Poland, the two countries with the highest rates: 21.2 and 17.5 per 100,000 women respectively.

"This predicted rise of female lung cancer in the UK may reflect the increased prevalence of young women starting smoking in the late 1960s and 1970s, possibly due to changing socio-cultural attitudes at that time.

"However, fewer young women nowadays in the UK and elsewhere in Europe are smoking and, therefore, deaths from lung cancer may start to level off after 2020 at around 15 per 100,000 women."

There has also been a steady reduction in breast cancer deaths across Europe in the last four years.

Prof La Vecchia added: "This reflects the important and accumulating advances in the treatment, as well as screening and early diagnosis, of the disease."

The study, published in the Annals of Oncology, looked at cancer rates in all 27 European Union member countries, as well as six individual countries ? France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the UK.

It looked at all cancers but focused on stomach, intestine, pancreas, lung, prostate, breast, uterus (including cervix) and leukaemias.

The study found that an estimated 1.3 million people will die from cancer -737,747 men and 576,489 women- in the 27 countries of the EU in 2013.

Though that number has increased since 2009, as there have been more cases in that period, the rate at which people have died has actually declined, six per cent in men and four per cent in women.

Lung cancer is still the main cause of cancer death among men, with nearly 187,000 deaths predicted for 2013, giving a death rate of 37.2 per 100,000 men.

Apple 'will simply kill Xbox' says Microsoft Xbox founder

Apple could destroy the traditional videogame market at any time it chooses, according to Nat Brown, the founder of the original Microsoft Xbox project.

In a fiercely critical online article, Brown outlines two reasons why Microsoft (the current market leader) will eventually lose out to Apple. Brown states bluntly: 'Apple, if it chooses to do so, will simply kill Playstation, Wii-U and xBox by introducing an open 30%-cut app/game ecosystem for Apple-TV."

    See also: Multimedia reviews

The first problem Brown identifies with the traditional console environment is the difficulty with which independent developers have getting their creations onto the marketplace. Dan Brown says:

"xBox?s primary critical problem is the lack of a functional and growing platform ecosystem for small developers to sell digitally-/network-distributed (non-disc) content through to the installed base of Xbox customers, period. Why can?t I write a game for Xbox tomorrow using $100 worth of tools and my existing Windows laptop and test it on my home Xbox or at my friends? houses? Why can?t I then distribute it digitally in a decent online store, give up a 30% cut and strike it rich if it?s a great game, like I can for Android, for iPhone?"

    Xbox Live

Recent Microsoft innovations such as Kinnect will not stand a chance against Apple's App Store ecosystem

This is a fair point, much is made of Apple acting as a gatekeeper for the App Store, but it is mostly compared to the completely free and open traditional computer market, rather than the extremely closed down console environment. Developing games for traditional consoles typically cost in the region of $30,000 as an absolute minimum, and then you have to go through long drawn out approval and submission processes.

But Brown also identifies a seocnd problem, in that "xBox?s secondary critical problem is that the device OS and almost the entire user experience outside the first two levels of the dashboard are creaky, slow, and full-of-shit." In short the Xbox interface doesn't make it easy enough for users to choose from a range of games.

"Even though Microsoft has a developer program, it costs $10,000 to be a part of and Microsoft makes the store where those apps live very hard to find"

Microsoft: 24 Million Kinect Sensors Sold Worldwide

Home / News / Microsoft: 24 Million Kinect Sensors Sold Worldwide

Microsoft has announced that their motion-sensing peripheral, Kinect, has managed to sell more than 24 million units worldwide since it launched back in 2010.

Originally unveiled at E3 2009 as Project Natal, the general gaming populous has always been quite skeptical about Kinect. Microsoft frequently promised core gaming experiences, but while they never really materialised in a positive form (Fable: The Journey/Star Wars Kinect), it hasn't dampened the sales of the peripheral at all.

Alongside the announcement, Microsoft also revealed that 76 million Xbox 360 consoles had been sold worldwide. This stat means that there's been a Kinect sensor sold for every Xbox 360's on the market.

In 2012, Microsoft also released the peripheral for the PC, allowing developers to come up with lots of creative uses for the device. There are numerous instances where people have modded it to suit their needs in the world of gaming and beyond.

Drug shown to reverse radioiodine resistance in some advanced thyroid cancers

Feb. 13, 2013 ? The experimental drug selumetinib may allow some patients with advanced thyroid cancer to overcome resistance to radioiodine (RAI), the most effective therapy for the disease, according to new research from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Published in the Feb. 14 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the study offers new hope for patients with a disease that can have a poor prognosis. An estimated 56,000 new cases of thyroid cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States, and that number is on the rise, according to the National Cancer Institute. About 5 percent of these patients will eventually develop distant metastatic disease, and the ten-year survival rate for patients with metastatic tumors that fail to respond to RAI is approximately 10 percent.

According to James A. Fagin, MD, Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Endocrinology Service Chief and senior author on the study, many trials have tested strategies for overcoming RAI resistance in metastatic thyroid cancers, but none have been successful. Previous studies have shown that a cell's ability to absorb RAI is controlled by the MAPK pathway, so Dr. Fagin and his colleagues examined whether selumetinib, an MAPK inhibitor, could reverse RAI resistance by inhibiting the signaling of genetic mutations in this pathway. The approach proved effective, especially in patients with thyroid cancers that contain a mutation in the RAS gene -- a component of the MAPK pathway.

"Blocking this key pathway increased the uptake of iodine, making radioiodine treatment potentially effective once again," said Fagin, who led this research in cells and in mice.

Following a five-day low-iodine diet, researchers administered selumetinib to 20 patients with tumors resistant to radioiodine. After four weeks, patients underwent a diagnostic scan that measured how much RAI their tumors would absorb. In eight patients, including all five with an NRAS gene mutation, selumetinib increased iodine uptake enough to allow patients to undergo RAI therapy.

Following RAI, five patients had confirmed partial responses and three had stable disease. In seven of the eight patients, outcomes remained unchanged during six months of follow-up. All eight patients had a decreased level of serum thyroglobulin -- a protein in the blood used to screen for advanced thyroid cancer -- and none experienced serious side effects from selumetinib.

"An advantage of this therapeutic strategy is that only a short course of drug therapy is required to elicit a significant clinical effect," Fagin said, adding that "the initial results show promise for RAS-mutant disease, but the hope is that a larger trial will shed light on whether selumetinib can be effective for a broader range of advanced thyroid cancer subtypes."

Memorial Sloan-Kettering will lead the international, multicenter phase III clinical trial of selumetinib later this year. The trial, which will be sponsored by AstraZeneca, will enroll patients who have recently had their thyroid gland removed -- a procedure known as total thyroidectomy -- due to thyroid cancer that has spread to nearby tissue or lymph nodes.

?Samsung has retained its place as the largest single mobile phone vendor in China, according to market data from iResearch.

Samsung took a 32.3 percent market share, with arch-rival Apple a distant second with 14.3 percent of the market.

However, the report noted that Samsung phones sell for an average retail price that is less than half that Apple is able to command - RMB2,100 vs RMB5,100.

Apple has been long rumoured to be working on a lower-cost version of its iPhone to help the company expand its market share outside its core developed markets. The market share and price differential in China offers a strong example of how the company is being held back by its reliance on premium price points.

NFL to investigate duo who crashed Super Bowl

    By Evan Hilbert | CBSSports.com

Two Savannah State University students found their way into Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans, and they captured it on video. Now, the NFL says they will investigate the incident.

"NFL security is conducting a review and following up with the appropriate authorities in New Orleans," spokesman Greg Aiello said in a statement to USA Today.

The video is pretty astounding, in that it seemed very easy for them to gain access. Basically, they just walked past people and pretended they knew where they were going -- and, at times, acted as if they had a job to do.

The students claim that they will be releasing a full-length documentary of the exploit, but you can check out the teaser below.
