Aetna CEO Says ObamaCare Could Double Health Insurance ...

A great many people are already stretched , and I see no signs of whom is going to be getting insurance who can?t afford it now as it is. My daughter has no insurance, my grandson is of age and has no insurance. No one has sent them any notices that there?s going to be any relief for them I think the whole thing is a big hoax. Just who are the other millions who this is supposed to help? In the first place it was no cure for those who can?t afford insurance. It was said that this was only going to cover so many millions, and the rest of those with no insurance would be left hanging. And from what I have read, illegals will be covered under medicaid. There?s simply no relief for citizens who make very little money, yet are still not eligible for medicaid. I could go on and on, but why bother.

Finance Tips: When To File for Bankruptcy ? High Voltage Interactive

Posted: 17th December 2012 by admin in Finance
Tags: bankrupt, bankruptcy, business, filing, finance

Financial advisers would tell you that it should be your last resort to file for bankruptcy and have debt consolidation instead for mountains of debt. When filing for bankruptcy, you should ensure that you can last for six years more without traveling into the same amount of debt. Here are a few things to know.

1. As said earlier, you can only file for bankruptcy again after six years. Bankruptcy can help those with great debt that takes 60% of most income, but it provides the same results as that of debt consolidation and has added advantages, which you cannot make use of, just because of overspending.

2. File for bankruptcy if your business losses are already too high or your medical condition does not allow you to work properly. Business losses leading to bankruptcy can have great implications to respective industries if the liquidation process is skipped. Anybody with a medical condition where payment insurance cannot handle the debts can file for bankruptcy.

3. File for bankruptcy only if you can provide legal fees. Bankruptcy can be costly and while some of your debts may be forgiven, you will still need to pay for legal fees not higher than your debt.

4. Lenders usually forgive or reduce the amount of repayments for your unsecured loans. They can also forgive secured loans, but you could use your collateral to pay them off. If you don?t want to tarnish your credit score too completely, using the collateral can help you.

Big price for inaugural pomp; much private money

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The pomp surrounding the inauguration of the president of the United States can carry a hefty price tag, from the glitzy galas to all those inaugural balls.

Think of it this way: It can cost about the same as 150 Bentley cars, several dozen yachts or some $20 million shy of the cash needed for a Boeing 737.

But taxpayers aren't on the hook for the fun stuff ? the balls and other celebratory events ? and this inauguration won't be as big as the last one for President Barack Obama.

A solid chunk of the tab for the 57th inauguration next month will be picked up by loyal supporters and other private donors, as it has been for years. In 2009, Obama raised $53 million in private money for his inauguration, when a record 1.8 million people braved the winter chill to see him take his place in history as America's first black president.

Previous inaugural committees have raised big cash, too, though not as much as Obama. President George W. Bush had about $40 million raised for each of his inaugurals. For President Bill Clinton, it was about $30 million in 1997.

But this time around, with the economy still sputtering out of the worst downturn since the Great Depression, Obama is scaling back the celebrations a bit.

The official activities will span three days, starting with a National Day of Service on Jan. 19 and culminating on Jan. 21 with the swearing-in, the parade and the balls. Last time, it was four days of events.

As for those inaugural balls, there won't be as many. There were 10 official balls four years ago, but this time around a source close to the inaugural planning says there will be fewer balls, though no final number has been decided yet.

In 2009, there also was a huge rock concert on the National Mall with U2, Bruce Springsteen, Beyonce and many others. No repeat this time. The planning for the 2013 inaugural doesn't include a mall concert.

Another big change is the way Obama will raise his inaugural funds.

Unlike four years ago, he now is accepting money from corporations to help pay for the festivities, and there are no limits on those donations. In 2009, the presidential inaugural committee capped individual donations at $50,000. Lobbyists and political action committees will still be banned from making donations.

Besides the balls and the traditional parade, private money also would pay for items such as giant TV screens on the mall for the swearing-in and thousands of portable toilets.

The other gigantic part of the tab is all the security. That's picked up by taxpayers, but it's harder to put a complete dollar figure on security. The Secret Service says it doesn't discuss those costs.

In 2009, the federal government reimbursed the District of Columbia $44 million for the inauguration. That was just for city costs, not Secret Service or military personnel.

The district's reimbursement included about $24 million paid to the Metropolitan Police Department, which hosted about 4,000 officers from surrounding jurisdictions. It also covered some $7 million for communications, call centers, fire and emergency medical services support costs. An additional $3 million was spent on repaving Pennsylvania Avenue for the parade, as well as for bus and traffic operations.

For this inaugural, some public money has already been set aside.

?The Architect of the Capitol has $4.2 million to spruce up the Capitol grounds for the swearing-in ceremony on the west front. That money also pays for the inaugural platform under construction, along with bleachers, and barricades.

?Nearly $2 million has been approved for U.S. Capitol Police.

?$1.2 million has been budgeted for the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, which stages the day's activities on the Capitol grounds, including the traditional inaugural luncheon for the president and vice president. The menu at the luncheon four years ago featured seafood stew, duck, sour cherry chutney and apple cinnamon spongecake.

Not everything costs money, though.

Tickets are free for the swearing-in ceremony. People interested in attending should contact their senator or congressman to request a ticket. Viewing from the National Mall does not require tickets.

Hotel rooms, however, will cost folks, and some packages require a big fat wallet.

For $100,000, the Ritz-Carlton has an "Access Washington" package that includes two first-class round trip domestic airline tickets, a four-night stay in a luxury suite, private and behind-the-scenes tours of Washington landmarks, an inaugural parade watching party at the Newseum, a designer dress and fancy tuxedo, a diamond and ruby pin and more.

What You Should Know With Social Video Marketing | Business 2 ...

In the world of internet video marketing, most companies see ?going viral? as the holy grail andSocial Video Marketing the prize they need to strive for. It?s like the advertising equivalent of winning the lottery: crafting a marketing message that?s so well-loved that people voluntarily share it with each other by the millions.

Well, if you want a viral video hit, you have to do it through social video marketing. Viral videos don?t simply create themselves; you have to put them out there where people can find them and be interested in them.

Now, it needs to be said: Sad to say, you probably won?t have a video mega-hit like the recent Gangnam Style. The odds are stacked against you. However, even if you don?t become a worldwide hit, social video can mean big things for your online marketing efforts. However, there?s more to it than just creating a video and putting it online.

So, let?s take a look at some of the elements that go into a successful online video marketing venture!

Key Tips For Improving Your Social Video Marketing

  • YouTube once, share everywhere: While YouTube is a social site by itself, to really leverage your videos, you need to spread them around. Virtually every major social site allows for video sharing, so start posting Tweets and status updates about your new video to maximize the number of people who hear about it.

  • Have good music: It?s a little odd to think about, but good music is a big key to a hit video. It really is worth spending a little money to license a decent track of library music, rather than using a cheap synthesizer production. You might also want to hunt around websites such as jamendo for freely-reusable Creative Commons work.

  • Get interactive: Video doesn?t have to be a ?sit back and watch? activity any more. Developers are increasingly using video plugin systems to enhance their content with clickable elements. You can add captions and commentary, include links to your website, run live news feeds, and more. If your video is fun to play with, it?s more likely to be shared.

  • Shorter is better: Online marketers argue a lot over what length of video is best for Video Marketingsocial video marketing. There are arguments to be made for super short (~1 minute) videos as well as longer ones in the 3-4 minute range, but unless you know for a fact your audience has an extremely long attention span, try to keep it under five minutes.

  • Make your point early: Since viewers often abandon videos before they?re done, you can?t slowly build up to a point. The main message of the video should be delivered early, hopefully within the first twenty seconds or so. Then recap it at the end, to reinforce it for those who stayed. (The popular Geico ?Rhetorical Questions? line of ads are a perfect example of the last two points in action. Notice the structure is essentially Message-Joke-Message. They work.)

  • Look for crossover appeal: In our view, if you are truly aiming to go viral, then you must have crossover appeal. People outside your audience who have no interest in your product whatsoever need to be entertained by your video and want to pass it along solely for its entertainment value. It cannot be purely self-focused, or it won?t go viral.

Good social video marketing is the key to a successful video-based campaign. If you do nothing else, focus on making entertaining videos that clearly present a message. That?s the ground-floor basis for success.???

Should tech entrepreneurs write codes? - The Nation

startup

Jay Jootar
@drjaysayji November 27, 2012 1:00 am

In addition, there are many other tasks demanded from an entrepreneur that seem more important: managing resources, hiring good people, motivating the team, ensuring a good product market fit, and so on.

Yet when you look at successful tech start-ups, most if not all of them have founders who coded, at least when they founded their companies. Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak, Larry Page, and Mark Zuckerberg are just a few notable examples. Steve Jobs is a rare exception, yet he is still very technical and can converse with engineers with ease.

In fact, the ability to write codes helps you as a tech entrepreneur in many different ways. Being able to code enables you to create a prototype of yourself. Even if you have cash to pay for programmers, which often times you don't, it is usually faster for you to create a prototype yourself if you can. You do not have to explain your ideas to others. A good prototype can give you the funding you need to create an actual product.

In addition, if you can code, you will have a better idea about what is and is not possible in terms of the product you are trying to build. You will be able to give a better assessment of the cost and time of doing something than if you don't know how to code at all.

The ability to code will make you speak the same language as your engineers, who will represent the majority of your team. Even if you cannot code as well as they can, you will command more respect if you can talk intelligently about their work. It is widely accepted that technical employees are more likely to follow founders with technical expertise.

During the life of a start-up, many decisions look "technical", but are in fact "business". These are technical decisions that have big impacts on business, and can make or break the company. If you do not have good technical understanding, you will not recognise these as such. You will most likely delegate these critical decisions to people who will look at it solely from a technical point of view - a recipe for disaster.

However, the importance of technical expertise varies according to the types of products you are building as well. Some products might compete primarily on technical features. Other products compete on domain knowledge, viral marketing, or other non-technical matters. In latter cases, the ability to code might not be as important as the former.

To sum up, even though it is not critical in all cases, the ability to code will make you stronger as an entrepreneur. But if you really cannot or will not, there is another option. "If you cannot become a Gates, then do what Jobs did - find yourself a Wozniak."

Gold hits one-week low as euro zone data hurts stocks

LONDON (Reuters) - Gold slid more than 1 percent to a one-week low on Thursday following falls in equity markets, but worries about the approaching U.S. 'fiscal cliff' underpinned prices.

World equity markets fell for a seventh day on Thursday, hit by evidence that Europe's debt crisis has stalled economic growth and by persistent concern over the budget problems in the United States.

Losses in stocks helped push spot gold down 0.79 percent to $1,712.4 by 1528 GMT, clawing back some territory after hitting a one-week low of $1,704.69, while U.S. gold for December was down $17.40 an ounce to $1,712.70.

"The fall to session lows in gold is driven by equities. And the end of mining strikes in South Africa is having an impact on platinum group metals, and gold too," Peter Fertig, a consultant with Quantitative Commodity Research, said.

The last of a wave of illegal strikes that have swept South Africa's mining sector ended on Thursday after workers accepted an offer from Anglo American Platinum Ltd, the world's top producer of the precious metal.

Platinum eased 1.06 percent to $1,566.25, while sister metal palladium was last at $632.47, down 0.15 percent.

Silver was down 0.67 percent at $32.43 an ounce.

Referring to falling gold and equity markets, Nic Brown, an analyst with Natixis, said, "You get periods of high correlation between risky assets, and this seems to be happening now.

"There are times when gold is just another commodity."

Brown added, however, that concerns over the approaching U.S. "fiscal cliff" - a combination of government spending cuts and tax rises that become effective in early 2013 if Congress cannot reach an agreement - may lift gold's appeal as a safe haven if negotiations over how to tackle it are protracted.

"If ... agreement looks less likely, I see risks to the upside in the gold price," he said.

President Obama said on Wednesday that Republicans would have to agree to raise taxes on the wealthy as the first step in a budget deal that would prevent a dysfunctional Washington from pushing the economy into recession.

Among other commodities, Brent crude rose towards $111 a barrel on Thursday as Israel's bombing of the Gaza Strip sparked worries around the supply of oil from the Middle East.

Political tensions traditionally also lift gold, though their impact has been outweighed in recent years by economic concerns. If the situation deteriorates, it could affect gold.

"An all-out war would trigger high oil prices, leading to higher inflation and subsequently a return to recession," which would support gold, Saxo Bank Vice President Ole Hansen said.

"In the short term, it could trigger a massive risk-off which ... would hurt gold as the dollar would rally."

GOLD DEMAND FELL IN Q3

A report from the World Gold Council showed on Thursday that global gold demand dropped 11 percent in the three months to September from record levels in the same period last year, hurt by lower demand in China as its economy slowed but with stronger Indian buying stemming a larger fall.

Gold prices in India, historically the world's biggest buyer of bullion, nudged down in line with spot prices on Thursday as the rupee firmed against the dollar, but dealers expected local prices to remain firm given the wedding season.

Global jewellery consumption dipped 2 percent to 448.8 tonnes, the WGC report showed, while demand for coins and bars fell 30 percent. European investors, particularly in German-speaking markets, accounted for half of the 128.1 tonne drop in bar and coin demand.

The WGC's managing director for investment, Marcus Grubb, told the Reuters Global Gold Forum that he expected full-year buying to be lower than in 2011 though prices would hold firm.

"Last year demand was around 4,400 tonnes ... but so far this year we are lower, mainly because of the bad first half in India," he said.

"We expect ... we will see demand in tonnes down by 5 to 10 percent from 2011, but the price will stay at or above where we are now with quantitative easing, (the) U.S. cliff and debt ceiling, and the OMT (bond purchase plan) in the euro zone, plus strong seasonal demand in India and China."

Wii U Wii U Rock You

Nintendo's next-generation video game console system, the Wii U, will arrive at stores on Sunday and is expected to sell out quickly. This could leave many holiday shoppers unable to find one as Nintendo will be unable to meet the demand. In many ways this is a replay of the 2006 launch of the Nintendo Wii, which was a smash hit -- so much so that it took years for supply to reach demand.

It's Never too late to start with Inbound Marketing | Business 2 ...

At DBC Digital, we like to stay current on inbound marketing trends. We do lots of research so we can provide relevant materials to our clients and prospects alike. Leading this morning?s business news was the announcement of a product launch by Microsoft. That, in itself, has not been unusual. Microsoft has been the leader in the software industry for 30 years.

inbound marketing denver, social media marketing, business blogging

We?ve come to expect new, usually innovative products from Bill Gates and company. However, Surface, their Windows 8 tablet, breaks from Microsoft?s decades-old tradition of relying on outside partners to manufacture the actual devices that run its software. Say what?!?! You mean?like Apple? Exactly?like Apple!

Many of our clients come to us and say it?s too late for them to start a business blog. They?ve missed the bandwagon. What they?ve been doing for years will have to be good enough. To which we respond, if Bill Gates can change horses way downstream, what?s stopping you?

Sure, you may feel like you?re not a writer. You probably judge yourself too harshly though. No one can write about your business better than you! That integrity will always have a way of appealing to your clients and prospects alike. On that level, you?re ready to write as well, or better, than anyone else in the world. As an ambitious business person, you?ve educated yourself in a variety of ways. Here?s one more for you.

Business blogging is essential in growing one?s business today. In an economy that is still perceived by many as being tenuous, whatever competitive edge one can utilize, the better off?their business is going to be. Here are some common sense reasons why you should be blogging online, if you?re not already:

1. The Internet operates 24/7, every day of the year.

2. The overhead is negligible.

3. Your competition is already using it.

4. It?s the best advertising vehicle ever.

5. Your revenue will increase, perhaps dramatically!

We?ve intentionally kept today?s post simple and to the point. Yes, there are ultimately important considerations when one is developing a blog:?Search Engine Optimization, content, social media choices and many more.

Look around though. Do a little research yourself. Check out your competition?s business blogging presence. As you can plainly see, there?s nothing magical about making a few keystrokes to promote?YOUR business in a way that is helpful to YOUR clients and prospects. Fairtrade TraidCraft Toys Review | Baby Freebies, Shopping Deals ...

Fairtrade TraidCraft Toys Review

I'm sure we've all seen the Fairtrade symbol on coffee, chocolate and a few other bits and pieces, but did you know that there are also a whole range of toys and gifts? You can fulfil every gift-need you have from the Traidcraft catalogue and help fight poverty in some of the poorest parts of the world at the same time. Traidcraft was established in 1979 as a response to poverty. They are the UK's leading fair trade organisation and run development programmes to help transform lives and they campaign in the UK and internationally to bring about trade justice.

I was actually really surprised, browsing the catalogue, to see exactly how much, and what a variety, of products are available through Traidcraft. I've seen the chocolate and coffee stands at churches and fairs and so on, but didn't know that they did clothing, toys, home?d?cor, paper, and a whole lot more. We were sent a couple of toys - a doll and wooden puzzles - to review. These were the perfect gifts for my three year old and my six month old.

Fairtrade TraidCraft Toys Review The Farmyard Jigsaw (?12) is a three-part, 9-piece puzzle, in otherwords it's three animal puzzles - a sheep, pig and cow - that each break into 3 pieces. It's perfect as a first puzzle for a little one, and is really good quality. These toys are made in Sri Lanka, providing employment opportunities for disadvantaged young people, often with no educational qualifications. The thing that struck me with this set is that it's perfectly usual. It's not unique and not spectacular. This is both a positive and a negative - negative because you wouldn't walk past ELC to get to it, but positive because by buying from Traidcraft you're getting similar quality and know you're supporting a good cause.

I couldn't find any information on things like paints used, and so on, but it does say that they conform with the?essential requirements of the applicable EC directives. I'd assume this includes non-toxic, child friendly paints, but it doesn't specifically say that. The pieces are a good size - my baby sticks them in her mouth, but there's not much chance at all of it going in too far, so I don't see it as a choking hazard. She can't really 'build' the puzzle yet, but she likes pulling it apart and playing with the individual pieces.

We really loved Mandy Monkey (?18) though. My toddler is really into dolls at the moment, and everything is named what it is - i.e. her teddy bear is 'Teddy', her Tigger toy is 'Tigger', her rabbit is called 'Bunny', so Mandy Monkey is called 'Monkey'. She is really lovely - a leggy forest friend at 40cm.

She's also from Sri Lanka, although a different project. Mandy has a hesian-like look, but is 100% cotton and stuffed with?natural kapok fibre. Her lovely dress is removable, which fortunately my toddler hasn't figured out yet as she likes her toys to be bare! There's also a spare skirt and blouse that she can be changed into. Mandy Monkey is really beautifully made and is one of my favourite toys among everything we have. Mandy has another absolutely beautiful friend: Gina Giraffe. I'd definitely like to add Gina to our family too - she's so colourful and cute.

Admittedly these toys are a little more expensive than you might pay for similar things elsewhere, but again, the money goes to such a good cause and helps families stay alive in conditions harder than most of us can imagine. I don't know... I just feel good?whenever I see my daughters playing with their Traidcraft toys.

Fairtrade TraidCraft Toys Review The Good

  • The toys are really well made. They are good quality and cute They are totally contemporary - there's a London Taxi and Bus toy I have my eye on too. There's so much variety to choose from

The Bad

  • Well, there's no way to dress it up, really - these aren't budget toys. They're not the cheapest you'll ever find.

The Verdict

I love the Traidcraft range of toys, gifts and every day items. I love the range, the options and the feel good factor. I'm pretty sure I could find something for every person on my Christmas list.

(AP) ? From above, it looks like a colossal amphitheater carved from rock, or the vast crater from a meteorite that crashed into Chile's Atacama desert ages ago.

Inside the world's largest open-pit copper mine, dump trucks as big as two-story houses work around the clock to haul hundreds of tons of rock and minerals 2,790 feet (850 meters) to the surface of this elliptical, seemingly endless, man-made hole.

But the open pit has run its course at Chuquicamata ? the storied mine that awoke the political awareness of a young Ernesto "Che" Guevara in the 1950s, inspired Marxist President Salvador Allende to nationalize the copper industry in 1971 and generated decades of prosperity for Chile.

After a century of exploitation, Chuquicamata has become too big, too deep and too old to continue digging in the open-pit method. The giant trucks that carry copper ore each guzzle 819 gallons (3,100 liters) of fuel a day driving 7 miles (11 kilometers) to the surface with ever-poorer loads as ore grades decline and copper yields fall.

Chuquicamata produced 443,000 tons of copper last year, but experts say that by 2019 it will be unprofitable.

So state-owned mining company Codelco is trying to head off closure by taking the daring step of converting the open pit into the world's largest underground mine.

Codelco believes the mine still has much more to give, with reserves equal to about 60 percent of all the copper exploited in the mine's history still buried deep beneath the crater. It has started digging more than 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) of tunnels underneath the pit in a $3.8 billion project to revive the mine.

"The technological challenges are enormous. We're talking about changing the biggest open pit copper mine in the world to the biggest underground mine in the world. This type of project is unique," said Juan Carlos Guajardo, head of CESCO, a Santiago-based mining think tank.

Engineers are building four huge floors underneath the pit, in addition to the tunnels, to extract 340,000 tons of copper a year from beneath the ground. The trucks will be replaced by conveyer belts that will carry ore to the grinding machines and the smelter.

Alvaro Aliaga, general manager of Chuquicamata's underground project, said the project will put Chile on "the vanguard of global mining."

All over the world, the race for resources is forcing countries to spend more and drill deeper than they ever have before. Energy companies in the United States are using hydraulic fracturing to tap huge gas and oil reserves from Pennsylvania to Alaska. Argentina is preparing to explode rock to get unconventional oil and gas in Patagonia. Brazil has pioneered deep-water drilling techniques in the Atlantic.

These long-term, multibillion-dollar projects are creating technological feats and opportunities for new industries unseen since the U.S. space race.

"This resembles some of the projects in Argentina and Brazil in terms of its magnitude and the challenge they represent for engineering because they're works of a tremendous scope and with a huge impact on the national economy," said Aliaga.

Work has already begun on the tunnels at the mine, which is 745 miles (1,200 kilometers) north of Santiago in the world's driest desert.

Perforating the rock with a machine that looks like a giant yellow praying mantis, engineers lay explosives that blast through the cavernous walls for ventilation shafts.

"Two of these five tunnels are going to be built to inject clean air and make sure the dirty one comes out," Maria Cristina Vallejos, the only female miner at Chuquicamata, said as she took cover from a nearby blast. "They'll give us the best environmental conditions for the underground work."

Inside one of the tunnels, a bulldozer removed rock and dirt while miners installed a steel mesh to avoid a cave-in, advancing at a painstaking pace of about 13 feet (4 meters) per day. The main tunnel will eventually stretch for more than 4.5 miles (7.5 kilometers).

The future for Chuquicamata, and Codelco, is likely to determine the prosperity of Chile, which has been growing fast and attracting foreign investment thanks largely to the stability that copper royalties provide.

"This (project) is not only seeking to guarantee the production of Chuquicamata but ensure the competitive position of Codelco," Aliaga said.

Everything about Chuquicamata, affectionately known as "Chuqui" by Chileans, is epic in scale, and its history is in many ways the history of Chile.

The area has been mined since before Spanish colonial times, but the current operation began in 1915 under foreign and local interests. When it was owned by Anaconda, the U.S. company built a whole town in the desert to support it, equipped with a railroad, schools, soccer fields and social clubs. Although many benefited, working conditions were risky, many miners died and a wave of strikes and crackdowns roiled the project, making it a symbol of the struggle for workers' rights.

"Che" Guevara visited the mine in March 1952 and deplored the treatment of the miners in his "Motorcycle Diaries."

Pablo Neruda, Chile's best-known poet and a life-long communist, also criticized Anaconda's grip on the Chilean miners.

"It was a grimy multitude, hunger and shreds, solitude, that excavated the gallery. That night I didn't see the countless wounds file by along the mine's cruel rim. But I was part of those torments," Neruda wrote in "Night in Chuquicamata."

The mine became Chilean state property when Allende nationalized copper in 1971 ? one of the acts that infuriated U.S. President Richard Nixon. Washington backed Allende's opponents, encouraged his overthrow and knew the coup that toppled him was in the works, though there is no evidence it directly participated.

But when Gen. Augusto Pinochet seized power in 1973, he declined to return copper to private hands. Ever since, Codelco has kept Chile's economy strong.

Conditions at Chuquicamata today are nothing like what Guevara and Neruda described. Mining remains a dangerous occupation and many workers still suffer injuries at marginal private operations, such as the San Jose mine that collapsed in 2010, trapping 33 workers underground for more than three months.

But mining deaths nationally fell 36 percent last year and it was Codelco that led the rescue of the trapped miners at San Jose, mesmerizing millions worldwide.

The seven-floor hospital Anaconda built in the 1960s is now buried under thousands of tons of rock from the expanding mine. The school's windows are broken and boarded up, and empty homes are caked in dirt. A flattened, dusty soccer ball lies on one of its abandoned streets. The town of 20,000 people was evacuated in 2007 to nearby Calama to make room for the mountains of mine waste now baking like elephants in the sun.

President Sebastian Pinera says Chileans should put nostalgia aside and look at the Chuqui of the future ? an underground mine that will keep delivering wealth to the nation for another 50 years.

"We have to prepare ourselves for the end of the old Chuquicamata and at the same time the new Chuqui, that starts today," Pinera said in July as he ordered the blast that began the work.

"It's nostalgic but we feel we're making history," said Mauricio Vivero, a construction engineer at Chuqui. "Perhaps the grandchildren of some of the miners that Che saw are now doctors, engineers, or even work right here. This mine gave us everything. Behind this mine, rests a whole country."

Presidential contest shifts focus to raising money

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? For a day, the presidential contest was almost all about money ? money to wage the presidential contest, that is. Mitt Romney promised to help Americans earn more, but he and President Barack Obama focused mostly on private fundraisers and big checks to fuel their 40-day sprint to Election Day.

Obama courted donors in Washington on Friday, while his Republican challenger did the same in Philadelphia and Boston, both men trading swing-state rallies for fundraising in places unlikely to play a significant role in the election of the next president on Nov. 6.

Romney admitted as much during a fundraiser at Philadelphia's exclusive Union League Club. The former Massachusetts governor said it would surprise everyone if he carried Pennsylvania, a state that hasn't supported a Republican presidential candidate in nearly a quarter century.

"We really would shock people if early in the evening of Nov. 6 it looked like Pennsylvania was going to come our way and actually did come our way. That can happen," Romney told about 200 donors who paid between $2,500 and $50,000 to hear his remarks.

"My priority is job creation and growing incomes," Romney continued. "My priority is not trying to punish people who have been successful."

The former businessman's remarks came at the first of three private fundraisers sandwiched around a midday rally. Obama kept close to Washington with a schedule of three fundraisers of his own.

After a midafternoon fundraiser at a downtown Washington hotel, Obama joined about 90 people who paid $20,000 apiece to attend an event hosted by Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va. The setting was Rockefeller's home, one of Washington's grandest mansions sitting behind a long, winding driveway near leafy Rock Creek Park.

Obama said that Democrats tend to either think "the sky is falling" or "everything is great."

"This is going to be a competitive race all the way down to the wire," Obama said. "I don't want anybody to feel we're done six weeks out."

As the candidates asked for cash, their campaigns prepared for next week's high-stakes meeting on the debate stage ? the first of three presidential debates and perhaps Romney's best chance to reverse the recent Obama gains suggested by opinion polls.

Both men worked international affairs into their politicking Friday with separate telephone calls to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Romney criticized Obama for not meeting with Netanyahu this week during his visit to the United Nations, where the prime minister declared the world has only until next summer to stop Iran from building a nuclear bomb. Aides to both candidates did not mention that dire declaration in their reports of the calls.

But money was largely the focus of the day.

In an election where the two sides already have collected more than $1 billion, each campaign has committed millions more they haven't yet raised to help blanket key states with television ads, drive national voter turnout operations and support massive teams of paid staff and consultants. Private events at places like the Union League Club, where dress codes prohibit wrinkled clothes and huge crystal chandeliers hang from ceilings, are regular occurrences for campaigns seeking the modern-day lifeblood of presidential politics.

Romney and the Republican Party had raised about $536 million through the end of August, the most recent reporting data available. Obama and the Democratic Party had collected about $655 million through the same period.

Both camps have been spending furiously, mostly on expensive television advertising in battleground states. That doesn't count the hundreds of millions of dollars likely to be spent by "super" political committees, which can raise and spend unlimited sums. Republican-leaning super PACs and Romney's campaign have outspent efforts for Obama's re-election since mid-July, ad data show.

Fundraising can present image risks for both sides.

During the 2008 campaign, Republican John McCain's campaign aired advertising calling Obama the "biggest celebrity in the world," showing his image along with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. Obama's brushes with fame and fortune have only grown in the years since.

The president's fundraising trips often combine big money with the mansions and chic brownstones of the nation's elite. Red-carpet stars like George Clooney, Spike Lee, Sarah Jessica Parker and Tyler Perry have all had Obama over for big-dollar dinners. At one fundraiser in Seattle's suburbs last spring, Microsoft founder Bill Gates stood beside a grand piano as Obama spoke at the home of Jeff Brotman, the co-founder of Costco.

And Obama's campaign could have easily staged its own version of the music world's Lollapalooza during his re-election bid: Fundraisers have been headlined by such acts as the Foo Fighters, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. The campaign is planning a "30 Days to Victory" concert on Oct. 7 in Los Angeles featuring Jon Bon Jovi, Earth Wind & Fire, Jennifer Hudson, Katy Perry and Stevie Wonder.

The event will try to eclipse a recent fundraiser with Jay-Z and Beyonce that raised about $4 million in New York.

On Friday, the president delivered remarks at a finance event at the Capital Hilton in Washington, with tickets starting at $250 and going as high as $10,000 per couple. He then attended the smaller fundraiser at Rockefeller's home before returning to the Capital Hilton for another event.

Obama also met with advisers Friday at Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington to prepare for the debates before heading Sunday to Nevada to hold practice sessions. His campaign released a political memo on Friday saying it expects Romney "to be a prepared, disciplined and aggressive debater."

Romney, too, planned to spend much of his weekend in debate preparation, a task he began three months ago.

But he spent more time fundraising on Friday than anything else. And like Obama, Romney faces fundraising-related risks.

As polls suggest his campaign is moving in the wrong direction, Romney is facing calls from within his party to spend less time with donors and more time with voters. Less than a week ago, he promised to do just that and spent three days this week campaigning across Ohio and Virginia. But he was back to fundraising Thursday night at a single Washington event that generated $5 million.

There, Romney was introduced by Bill Marriott, the chairman of Marriott International.

"He rescued me just as he's going to rescue this great country," Marriott proclaimed after sharing a story about boating on the same New Hampshire lake where both men own vacation homes.

The campaign would not say how much Romney raised at the Philadelphia event, but he was expected to generate at least $7 million at two Boston fundraisers Friday evening. The two-day total was expected to exceed $13 million.

Internet Marketing Strategies: Have Multiple Benefits For Your ...

Some businesses will expand to huge proportions, while others will stay small and local. However, some small businesses simply fade away. A large percentage of all businesses, including online businesses, fail. Avoid failure by using these great marketing tips.

Conducting business online can often seem very impersonal. This is an important strategy for smaller, independent businesses who want to create personal relationships with customers for retention purposes.

Make sure to keep very detailed records of all aspects of your business. This should include everything from sales and refunds to referrals and traffic. When you stockpile these stats, you can read them and deduce vital information about what?s working for you and what isn?t. If you need to improve something, you can find out which areas need improvement and how you can improve them.

If you know what kind of lingo people use when talking about the brand you are selling you can use it in your ads. This can help you make deeper connections with your readers by speaking in the way they speak, in the language they use. Proper word usage goes a long way in representing your business.

Long before site ranking becomes a concern for you, you need to build yourself an outstanding website. This needs to be the first thing anyone does in online business. The easier your site is to navigate and operate, the less tweaking you?ll need to do in the future.

A frequently-asked questions page (FAQ) makes an excellent model for your Internet marketing content. You can write the questions with the answers already in mind, and use them to advertise your products! Suggest one of your products for a particular issue or problem. Write questions in a way that you can have the chance to mention the product when answering without making it seem like a product placement.

Emails are really important when establishing an Internet marketing campaign. You need to ensure that your mail stays safe. Don?t use free email services that lack functions that you need, such as the ability to store mail indefinitely. If you want the most security and the most features for your mail, try setting up your own archiving service by using an actual web host?s features instead of those free mail services.

Record a video of you demonstrating the product you are attempting to sell. This will give your customers a good idea of how your products work. You can highlight the features and benefits that might not be in the product description. You will be able to show the video on your blog or company social media sites.

Take the time to learn the basics involved with designing websites. A tremendous source of information is available online where you can find excellent tutorials on learning HTML, CSS and everything else that goes into designing web pages. Dedicate a certain amount of time each day to learning web design and your website will be reaping the benefits before you know it.

If you don?t devote your full attention to all of your social media profiles it will be a detriment to your company. Profiles that are stagnant are considered to be spam.

Do not discard your projects when they don?t initially appear fruitful. Just because a method didn?t work before does not mean it is doomed to fail. The Internet evolves daily. Do not spend time and money on things that do not really work and focus on efficient techniques instead.

Provide an easy way for others to link back to your website by providing an attractive link-back button. Those who enjoy your site will be able to provide a link back to you by simply clicking that button you have provided. Then, anyone who visits their site will see your link and possibly decide to click on the link and visit your site. They might even decide to link back to your site themselves.

Learn from others? mistakes and make their failure work to your advantage. Use the tips here to make yourself a winner

European breast screening "benefits outweigh harms"

LONDON (Reuters) - National breast screening programmes in Europe save more lives by catching tumours early than they harm through over-diagnosis and women should be made more aware of benefit-risk balance, researchers said on Thursday.

In the first comprehensive review of European breast cancer screening programmes, scientists found that for every 1,000 women aged 50 to 69 screened every two years, between seven and nine lives are saved.

But in a finding likely to add to an already fierce international debate about the merits of routine screening for cancer, they also found that in the same group, four women would be "over-diagnosed" - when screening picks up a tumour that would never have presented a problem.

Stephen Duffy, professor of cancer screening at Queen Mary, University of London and one of two lead researchers on the study said the harm caused by over-diagnosis in the few women was clearly outweighed by the reduction in cancer deaths.

"(This review) reports results from screening millions of women, and confirms that the screening services are delivering the benefits expected from the research studies conducted years ago," he said as the research was published in the Journal of Medical Screening on Thursday.

"In particular it is good news that lives saved by screening outweigh over-diagnosed cases by a factor of two to one."

Over-diagnosed" breast cancers are tumours diagnosed during screening which would never have given rise to any symptoms during a woman's lifetime and would not have been diagnosed had she not been screened.

That can lead to women undergoing unnecessary and invasive treatment and suffering the physical and psychological impact of a breast cancer diagnosis that would otherwise not have come up.

The researchers also found that for every 1,000 women screened, 170 women would have at least one recall for a non-invasive assessment before a negative result could be confirmed, and 30 women would have at least one recall for an invasive procedure, such as a biopsy, before getting a negative result.

These types of results are called "false positives" and can cause stress and anxiety until a negative result is confirmed.

The issues of over-diagnosis and false positives were at the heart of rows among cancer patients and specialists in Europe and the United States which blew up in 2009 when American health officials questioned the value of routine mammograms for women at age 40 and suggested raising the annual screening age to 50.

Nordic scientists then published a study in 2010 which found no evidence that screening women for breast cancer has any effect on death rates and said it was "time to question whether screening has delivered the promised effect".

Worldwide, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and around 1.38 million women were diagnosed it in 2008, according to the World Health Organisation's Globocan database.

In Europe, including non-European Union (EU) countries, 425,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in 2008 and 129,000 European women died of the disease.

For this latest study, the European Screening Network (EUROSCREEN) working group with members from nine European countries where screening programmes have been assessed reviewed estimates of benefit in published studies in terms of cancer deaths prevented, and the major harms such as over-diagnosis.

It also reviewed the organisation, participation rates and performance parameters of 26 screening programmes in 18 countries involving 12 million women between 2001 and 2007.

Eugenio Paci, director of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute in Florence, Italy and the co-lead researcher on the project, said the aim was to weigh up "the pros and cons of breast cancer screening" to ensure "women are fully aware of the chief benefits and harms and can make a fully informed choice" about whether to agree to be screened.

"There has been quite a lot of discussion recently over the worth of breast cancer screening," he said. "For this reason it is timely that the international group of experts has assessed the impact...and has found that it is contributing to the reduction in deaths from the disease."

He said the review's conclusions should be communicated to women in Europe and called for health authorities to improve communication with women and make the information "more accessible, relevant and comprehensible."
