Three-time Grade 1 stakes winner Smiling Tiger retired | Washington Thoroughbred Owners Association

It was announced on July 4 that WTBOA Sales poster horse Smiling Tiger has been retired from racing and will stand the 2014 breeding season at Premier Equine Center in California for a $5,000 fee.

A six-year-old son of Hold That Tiger out of Federal Way Handicap winner Shandra Smiles, a daughter of leading Washington sire Cahill Road, Smiling Tiger was bred in Kentucky by Dr. Rodney Orr, of Silverton, Oregon.

Orr consigned him through Halvorson Bloodstock Services LLC to the 2008 WTBOA September yearling sale where trainer Jeff Bonde purchased the chestnut colt for $40,000 for Alan Klein and Philip Lebherz.

A stakes winner in each of his four seasons of racing, Smiling Tiger placed in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes as a two-year-old in the first two what would be 16 graded stakes placements. At three he won both the Grade 1 Bing Crosby and Ancient Title Stakes and placed in three other Grade 1 races, including a third in the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Sprint. For his efforts, he was among the three finalists for the 2010 Eclipse Award sprinter title. At four, the speedy colt added his third Grade 1 triumph in the Triple Bend Handicap and he made his final start a winning one when he came home on top by a length in the Vernon O. Underwood Stakes run at Betfair Hollywood Park last December.

All in all Smiling Tiger made 23 starts while under Bonde's care and amassed a 9-2-8 record. His final earnings of $1,480,704 places him at the top of all horses to have gone through the WTBOA sales ring.

South Africa: Mandela remains in hospital

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Nelson Mandela remains in a South African hospital, where he is in critical but stable condition.

There was no official update Monday morning on the health of the 94-year-old former president and anti-apartheid leader, who was admitted June 8 to the hospital for a recurring lung infection.

People in South Africa and around the world have expressed concern for Mandela, sending messages of support for a man seen as a global symbol of reconciliation.

Mandela spent 27 years in prison during white rule and was released in 1990. He led the shift from apartheid to democracy and became president in all-race elections in 1994.

Hostess To Starting Freezing Some Twinkies Before Shipping Them

Hostess will begin freezing some of its Twinkies before shipping them when it re-releases the highly-anticipated pastries this month, the company confirmed to The Huffington Post on Friday.

In an emailed statement, Hostess spokeswoman Hannah Arnold said that the decision was made after a small percentage of the company?s retail customers explicitly requested frozen versions of the treat, which will allow companies to ?date the product for freshness,? while providing ?flexibility in filling their shelves.?

Any retail customer will still be able to request non-frozen Twinkies, and the company maintains freezing Twinkies will have ?no impact on the quality or taste? of the product.

?Any suggestion that Hostess is changing the integrity of the iconic snack cakes consumers have loved is completely untrue,? Arnold wrote. ?The new ownership is absolutely committed to baking top quality snack cakes and, in fact, is making major investments to ensure that Hostess products are as good, if not even better, than before.?

Sources told the New York Post, which first reported the news, that they feared the new freezing process could threaten the product?s integrity and future popularity.

Hostess filed for bankruptcy in early 2012, after which investment firm Metropoulos & Co. swooped in to buy Twinkies and other Hostess snacks in 2013.

Last month it was announced that Twinkies would be back on shelves by July 15.

The New Normal: Living with Thyroid Cancer

I was diagnosed with stage IV thyroid cancer September 2012 after having a lump on my neck checked. You see I had a swollen gland I had checked out by an ENT doctor back in the fall of 2004. He did a quick check by placing his hand on the gland -- no imaging was done, I was told I had a prominent artery and that I had nothing to worry about. I went on with my life thinking everything was peachy dandy, when in fact I had cancer that was spreading unbeknownst to me. So, when my diagnosis came September 2012, it was a complete surprise and shock. The timing could not have been any worse --there was so much going on in my life at the time that when I was given the diagnosis, I had no immediate reaction. In fact, until my diagnosis, I had never heard of thyroid cancer.

A few weeks later I had surgery, a thyroidectomy and neck dissection. I'm not going to lie, it was no fun. Add to the fact that I was left with an extensive battle wound or badge of honor depending on how you look at it. Suffice it to say I have a gnarly long scar that begins behind my right ear, travels down the right side of my neck to the bottom and then crosses my lower neck to the left side. Gorgeous right?! A month later I received radioactive iodine and was in isolation for one week. Oh boy, talk about side effects. I was riddled with them. I must admit that the radiation experience was worse than the six and a half hour surgery and recovery.

It is now nine months since my diagnosis, we haven't quite reached the happy medium with my thyroid medication and I occasionally have a side effect flare up, but I'm happy to report that I am otherwise doing well. I firmly believe this is my new normal.

I still have good and bad days, but I have made positive changes that give me more good days than bad days. I changed my entire diet. I juice daily and take antioxidant/vitamin supplements. My energy level is better than it has been in so many months.

Taliban hit NATO supply compound in Kabul, kill 6

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Taliban suicide attackers blew up a truck bomb early Tuesday at the gates of a NATO supply company's compound in Kabul and sprayed gunfire at security personnel, killing four guards and two civilians, Afghan officials said.

The morning attack was the latest in a series targeting high-profile locations in the Afghan capital. The attacks have made clear the Taliban have no intention of ending the violence, even as they say they are willing to enter peace negotiations.

The U.N. deputy chief, Jan Eliasson, who was in Kabul wrapping up a five-day trip to Afghanistan when the attack took place, said continued violence could only harm the Taliban's own cause.

"I would hope that there would be steps taken by the leadership of the Taliban to realize that the tool of violence in any case cannot instill confidence in the population," he said. "There's been too much suffering there and there are too many widows, too many father-and-motherless children in Afghanistan and I think we need to instill a sense of calm."

Tuesday's attack started before dawn, when a suicide bomber drove a small truck to the outer gate of the logistics center used to supply NATO troops and detonated it. The explosion made a massive crater in the ground and damaged a guard tower, said Kabul provincial police chief Mohammad Ayuob Salangi.

Two truck drivers waiting nearby to enter the compound were also killed in the blast, along with the bomber.

Three gunmen then stormed into the breach and battled with security guards for more than an hour before being killed. Four Nepalese security guards were also killed, Salangi said.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the assault, saying it was "a very effective attack that embarrassed the enemy."

Mujahid said only three militants had been involved in the "attack on a big foreign base important for NATO logistics," and listed them by name in a statement on the group's website.

The Taliban last month opened a new political office in the Gulf nation of Qatar, and indicated that they were prepared to enter into Afghan peace talks, but at the same time did not renounce violence.

The following week, Taliban suicide attackers were able to get past preliminary security checks and open fire on guards at a gate to the presidential palace in a bold attack at the heart of the Afghan government.

Earlier in June, heavily armed fighters launched a failed assault on NATO's operational headquarters at Kabul's international airport and blew up a car bomb outside Afghanistan's Supreme Court.

Eliasson said if U.N. support was needed to help start the peace process, he was glad to provide it ? but only if requested by the Afghan government.

"The reconciliation process must be, if it is to be successful, Afghan-led," he said. "What I hope will take place is, of course, contacts between the two parties ... and as long as those contacts continue, there's no specific need for the United Nations to be involved."
